Fugazi es una leyenda de la escena independiente, un sonido totalmente diferente a lo que se venia haciendo, que parte del hardcore punk y le agrega ritmos funk y reggae, estructuras irregulares en las que un tema puede parar y volver a empezar en cualquier momento, y riffs inspirados en bandas como led zeppelin y queen.
Con una etica DIY inquebrantable, se autoimpusieron la regla de que en los recitales la entrada no debia costar mas de 5 dolares (aunque esta regla no era inviolable, siempre mantuvieron sus entradas a precios economicos) y que los locales en los que tocaban dejaran pasar a menores de edad, tampoco vendian merchandise, puesto que de esa manera se abaratarian los costos, a diferencia de otras bandas contemporarias, los tours de fugazi siempre daban beneficios a causa de su bajo costo.
Tocaban donde pintara, desde el club de la sociedad protectora de alces hasta en la parte de atras de una pizzeria con espacio suficiente, en parte lo hacian para matar el aburrimiento de salir de gira a los tipicos clubs, pero tambien para mostrar a sus escuchas que habian otra posibilidades alternativas.
